In a report issued in 2010, the World Bank found that the poor state of infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa reduced national economic growth by two percentage points every year and cut business productivity by as much as 40 percent. The African Development Bank views poor infrastructure as a critical barrier to reducing poverty and accelerating growth on the continent. It is fair to say that Africa has not yet experienced the dividends that infrastructure can bring.
Studies show that up to 25 percent of international development aid is lost to fraud or corruption. We know that this impacts the poor the most. Despite the magnitude of the problem, fraud and corruption often go undetected and unreported. That said, many organisations, are actively combatting this challenge, and are having success in addressing the problem.
Fredrik Galtung, CEO of Integrity Action facilitated a panel of leading experts to discuss how can we reduce the amount of aid that is lost due to fraud, mismanagement or corruption.
From 26-29 March 2014, Integrity Action held a Teaching Integrity Workshop in Almaty, Kazakhstan at KIMEP University, with 24 participants from 7 Kazakh universities and from one NGO. The workshop was conducted by Ellen Goldberg, Integrity Education Programme Director and Dr. Harutyun Aleksanyan, Europe and Central Asia Programme Manager.

Integrity Action is delighted to announce that our Chief Operating Officer, Joy Saunders won the Director of the Year for Public and Third sector in London and South East 2014. Joy received the award at a gala dinner and award ceremony held at the Institute of Directors in London last night, 11th June 2014.
Introducing the winners, John Minards, South East regional leader for PWC, said “Tonight we are here to celebrate some of the finest directors in our region who, in spite of a challenging backdrop, have demonstrated exceptional leadership, and “best in class” performance.”
From 23-26 April 2014, Integrity Action’s Europe and Central Asia region (ECA) of the Integrity Education Network (IEN), held an integrity training session for trainers in Saratov, Russia. The workshop was organised for IEN partner Institutes of Public Administration (training institutes for Russian public officials) and universities from the Volga region. 23 local trainers of public officials participated in this workshop.
Feedback Labs and Ashoka Changemakers initiated a competition last year in an attempt to find innovative solutions that are helping feedback loops empower people, drive better decisions, and put resources where they’ll make a difference. Their aim was to help citizens achieve better results in social services, philanthropy, and governance.
Some states lack the capability and/or the willingness to progressively promote the shared development of their citizens and are particularly vulnerable to external shocks and internal conflicts. These states have been described as “fragile states” (Naudé, 2012). Fragile and conflict-affected countries are home to 1.5 billion people. Approximately 70 percent of these fragile states have experienced conflict since 1989 with basic governance transformation estimated to take 20-40 years.
Integrity Action has recently entered into a partnership with Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to deliver a multi-year programme in the Middle East on water integrity funded by SIDA.
